Kui Xie – Ted and Lois Cyphert Distinguished Professor & Lab Director | . . . .
Dr. Kui Xie is Ted and Lois Cyphert Distinguished Professor and Professor of Educational Psychology and Learning Technologies in Department of Educational Studies at The Ohio State University (OSU). He is the founding director of The Research Laboratory for Digital Learning. He earned his Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology and Technology from University of Oklahoma. Xie is the associate editor of The Internet and Higher Education and an associate editor of Educational Psychology in Frontiers in Psychology. He served as a guest editor for Journal of Research on Technology in Education. He also serves a member of the editorial board for Contemporary Educational Psychology and Journal of Educational Psychology. Nationally he served chair for American Educational Research Association(AERA) SIG Design and Technology and SIG Instructional Technology, and section chair for AERA Division C Section 3.A. Learning Environments and Section 3.B. Technology-Supported Environments. In 2015, Xie was named the Ted and Lois Cyphert Distinguished Professor. In 2017, Xie received the EHE Distinguished Research Award from The Ohio State University. He also received a Chang Jiang Scholar Award from the Chinese Ministry of Education. His research interests include: computer-supported collaborative learning, motivation and human cognition, learning analytics and social network analysis, artificial intelligence in education, instructional design and development, problem solving and scaffolding, and technology integration in teaching and educational research.

Zilu Jiang – Ph.D. Candidate | .
Zilu Jiang received her Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language from Lanzhou University, China. She worked as an online Chinese teacher and course designer in Chinese Teaching Center at the Open University of China 2012-2017 and also served as an online Chinese instructor for American high school students at Confucius Institute at Michigan State University in 2013-2016. She has designed and developed online courses for multiple levels and also involved in the online curriculum design and online flipped classroom research. She was selected as an online Chinese teacher at the STARTALK program at the University of Virginia in 2016. She also provides workshops and teacher training on distance teaching and technologies integration in classrooms. Her current academic interests include instructional design and development, technology integration in teaching and learning. technology-enhanced language learning, and learner’s motivation and engagement in the digital environment.
Cara North – Ph.D. Candidate | . .
Cara North is an award-winning Senior Learning Experience Designer at The Ohio State University’s College of Education and Human Ecology’s Office of Information Technology. She has worked in learning and development for 10+ years working in corporate, higher education, and non-profit settings. She earned her B.A. in journalism from the University of Kentucky and M.A. in workforce development from The Ohio State University. Cara is a well-known international speaker in instructional design who has presented more than 75 presentations for practitioner audiences. Her research interests are learning experience design, learner engagement, instructional design professional development, and learning analytics.
Babatunde Akinkuolie – Doctoral Student | .
Babatunde Akinkuolie earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology from the University of Belize in Belize City, Belize. He subsequently received his Master’s degree in Computer Engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan and an M.B.A from Southern New Hampshire University, New Hampshire. His research interests include Computer-Aided Instruction, Distance Learning, Student-centered learning in digital environments and Technology Integration in Teaching and Learning.
Jingwen He – Doctoral Student | .
Jingwen He earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Management and her Master’s degree in Educational Assessment and Evaluation from Beijing Normal University, China. She has been participated in WISE (Web-based Inquiry Science Environment) project for three years. Her research interests include students’ motivation in computer-supported learning environment, science education, feedback strategy and self-regulated learning.

Lizeng Huang received his dual Master’s degrees in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Brandeis University and Minzu University of China. Prior to Ohio State, he served as Chinese lecturer at University of Virginia (2018-2021), Chinese Flagship Program at Western Kentucky University (2016-2018), Brandeis University (2015-2016), as well as CET Beijing (2015 summer). He values the importance of integrating technology into his classes and developed online Chinese courses for multiple language levels at different institutions. His current academic interests include student’s motivation and engagement in digital learning environments, technology-enhanced language teaching and learning, and teachers’ engagement strategies.
Jessica Bates – Doctoral Student | .
Jessica Bates received her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia in 2014. She worked as an online educator and course designer from 2008-2020. She currently is the K-8 Curriculum Supervisor for Virtual Virginia, a program of the Virginia Department of Education. In this role, she oversees course design and development for multiple levels and content areas. She also provides training in instructional design for online course developers. She is a current and active member of the Virtual Learning Leadership Alliance. Her academic interests include instructional design and development, technology integration in teaching and learning, social emotional learning in the virtual setting, and learner’s motivation and engagement in the digital environment.
Mike Frazier – Doctoral Student | .
Mike Frazier is an educator and researcher with extensive experience teaching English, writing, and educational technology in public and private K-12 and Higher Education institutions in both the United States and South Korea. He earned his Master of Education (dual certification in English, Educational Technology) from The Ohio State University, and Bachelor of Arts in English from Miami University of Ohio. Prior to entering the PhD program at Ohio State, he taught grades K-9 in South Korean schools for several years, high school English in Olentangy Schools’ STEM program, and has been a faculty member at Franklin University, where he teaches Writing and Learning Strategies courses. Mike holds graduate appointments in the Dennis Learning Center where he teaches Learning Motivation and Strategies, as well as with the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) team in the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) where he leads professional development opportunities and consulting services for faculty across various departments to improve writing instruction at Ohio State. His current research interests include gamification, student engagement, and sense of community in increasingly ubiquitous learning environments mid and post pandemic.

Mitchell Shortt received his bachelor’s degree from The College of Charleston in South Carolina. He subsequently earned an M.S.in International Management and Marketing from the University of Sheffield and an M.A.in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Saint Michael’s College. His research interests include student motivation in digital environments, teaching strategies, game-based learning, and computer-assisted language learning.
Margaret Bowman – Academic Designer at McGraw-Hill Education | .
Margaret Bowman earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Ashland University (Ashland, OH) with a teaching license in Middle Grades Education, and her Master of Education from Tiffin University (Tiffin, OH). She was a middle school Math and Language Arts teacher for 6 years, before joining the Academic Design Department at McGraw-Hill Education in Columbus, Ohio. She currently works as an in the Middle School Mathematics Department, writing and designing digital curriculum. Her research interests include the role of technology and technology integration into K-12 education, professional development needs for technology integration, and gender biases in learning technology.

Nathan Hawk is an OSU alumnus, who completed his doctoral work in 2021. He is currently an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture, College of Education, at Texas A&M University. Mike Nelson is an OSU alumnus, who completed his doctoral work in 2020. He was a research associate in the lab between 2019-2020. He is currently an associate staff member in the Cleveland Clinic Education Institute, where he will have an academic appointment as an assistant professor through the Lerner College of Medicine. His research interests include technology in teacher education, teacher beliefs, and project-based learning.
