In this course, you will gain an understanding and appreciation for design as a discipline and refine your aesthetic eye. You will learn the building blocks of design including the distinction between elements and principles and determine their application in a variety of environments and visual presentations. You will not only learn how to articulate your ideas using design language and terminology, but will also gain an understanding of the art of visual communication using industry standard Adobe Photoshop software. You will explore the senses and how they can be utilized to influence human interaction and experiences. Do you wear clothes? If so, this class is for you! Do you notice people's clothing and wonder what message they are trying to send? Or, perhaps you have noticed people treating you differently based on how you dress? In this class, you will learn the impact on how dress plays a role in judging others and ourselves. A cross-cultural study of race, ethnicity, gender diversity, and meaning of appearance/dress as manifestations of both individual and group behavior, social organizations, and cultural norms.

This is a survey course in which students study the historical and contemporary elements of literature intended for children including picturebooks, traditional tales, novels of realism, and fantasy; nonfiction, poetry and multicultural books.

This survey course provides an overview of contemporary young adult literature and invites students to actively engage in the literary arts through reading, analyzing, discussing, and writing about young adult literature and its relationship to cultural constructions of adolescence. We will explore and reflect on how literary works of art shape our world views, identities, and humanity.

What representations of Black Youth are present in media & multimodal texts? How do we work towards cultivating antiracist/anti-bias society via the use of Black Youth literature and media?

The course approaches the meaning of citizenship through the lens of equity, diversity, and justice. Foregrounding teachers™ transformative roles in schools, it addresses how discussions of inclusion, community-building, problem-solving, dialogue, advocacy, etc. are integral part of justice-oriented citizenship. It explores debates on school inequities and the role of educators in creating inclusive curriculum and social belongings for all students, and especially on the need to affirm students™ identities and experiences. In this course, students will examine how schools are sociopolitical spaces where hierarchies and socially unjust practices are often reinforced through narratives of citizenship and reflected in biased practices in areas of school curriculum, policy, pedagogy, daily interactions, discipline, and punishment. The course addresses the urgency to meet the needs of increasingly diverse student populations and communities.

Family serves as the foundation of who we are, developing the assumptions we believe about ourselves and the world around us. The individual is understood within the context of the environment, and we explore this idea ourselves by interviewing our own family. What parts of your family are interwoven into the person you are today? Connect with the individual experience of family through the stories of our fellow students. Explore how family serves different roles throughout each point of our lives and is pivotal to our development. Reflect on how the idea of family has been discussed through history and in the present day in our ever-evolving world, with the family evolving alongside it. Connect with loved ones to understand how your own family has helped develop you through time!
